Jamali, a Pakistani-born American artist, created the term Mystical Expressionism to identify his fusion of contemporary consciousness and art's ancient traditions. His life works, which he calls Art and Peace, span nearly 40 years and number well beyond 60,000 individual pieces, surpassing the astonishing 50,000+ works by Picasso. Unique and textured surfaces highlight all of his original works, from paintings to sculptures and his large pigmentations on cork are easily recognized, whether figurative or abstract. This powerful image, titled "The Idol” c.1988, measures 58 x 40 inches. Thick black strokes, reminiscent of Chinese brush paintings, reveal an image of a young slender woman sitting at a table . Exposed cork visible through out the painting creates a warm, earthy background for the captivating image. Her fashionably cut black hair is parted on top and falls away from her head to create a frame outlining her features, which have been created twice. The first image was loosely drawn in pencil of the woman looking straight ahead, but in the second, which is fully finished, she has turned her head slightly to her left and is looking down, as if she’s just moved her head. Above her, a halo of white rays project her worldly position while a small white head looks back at her from the table to raise the question, which is the idol, the woman or the head?
