Description
This spectacularly larger than life-sized 16th century Buddha head from Burma's Ava Period is lacquered and painted stucco over brick, a common practice of the period. The classic Ava Period Buddha features include; a large forehead, oval face, pointed chin, curved natural eyebrows, downcast eyes in meditation, straight and low bridge of nose, small lips pointed forward, and a clear cleft above the upper lip. The back of the head is rough and shows evidence it was broken free from an attached wall, most likely an interior wall of a temple. Large, standing Buddha figures were common in Evidence of a smaller, gilded head from an earlier period can be seen in the neck area. Head is 13.5 inches tall. Overall on its custom base, the impressive figure stands 25.5 inches tall
