WILKES, Stephen. Ellis Island: Ghosts of Freedom. 2006. FIRST EDITION. INSCRIBED BY WILKES TO SECRETARY ALBRIGHT.
Inscribed: “To Madam Secretary, best wishes Stephen Wilkes.” Following the Communist Party takeover of Czechoslovakia in 1948, Madeleine Albright and her family first emigrated to Great Britain and from there boarded the ocean liner SS America to New York City, arriving on November 11, 1948. Throughout her life, Albright expressed gratitude for the opportunities afforded her by the United States. She often said that “becoming a U.S. citizen is the most important thing that ever happened to me.”
In original binding with dust jacket (condition generally fine).
Provenance: Secretary Madeleine K. Albright (inscription from Wilkes, bookplate).
