Description
Manuscript receipt on vellum. 1575. Signed by Richard Stonley. 13.5" x 1.5". ******** Richard Stonley is best known as Shakespeare's first reader, as his diary records purchasing "Venus and Adonis" in 1593 – the first recorded purchase of a work by Shakespeare. Stonley signed the present receipt while working as a teller at the royal Exchequer. The present regards monies from the monastery of Bermondsey. This document also names William Gardner, who also has a connection with Shakespeare inasmuch Gardner accused Shakespeare of threatening his life. This led Shakespeare to satirize Gardner as Justice Shallow in "Henry IV" and also in "The Merry Wives of Windsor."
