Description
Large album (13" x 9.75") containing numerous pieces of engraved music from around the early 1800s, bound together in this volume, notably containing "The Rose to calm my Brother's cares… taken from the Celebrated Poem of Bride of Abydos" by Lord Byron, with music composed by Isaac Nathan, who has signed the title-page (lower right corner.) Isaac Nathan (1792-1864) was a Jewish composer known as the father of Australian music. He is well-known for his collaboration with Lord Byron, as he supplied music to Byron's lyrics. The present work was the first which Nathan presented to Byron, in hopes of a collaboration, but his letter to Byron regarding the work was either never received or ignored by Byron. Nathan then solicited him a second time for another work (Hebrew Melodies), and this letter also went unanswered; luckily, a mutual friend named Douglas Kinnaird would bring them together. (Baron, Jeremy H. “Byron’s Passovers and Nathan’s Melodies.”) ********** The present album contains numerous works of engraved music, assembled and bound together. Most are 4 to 5 pages in length, some with attractive engraved or lithographed pictorial titles. Bound in period 1/4 morocco over marbled boards, with the leather label of Miss Hambly lettered in gilt to front board.
Condition
Edges worn, extremities rubbed/scuffed, all intact. Contents mostly clean throughout, one of the works with some marginal stains, some occasional foxing, a few repairs, but overall the condition is quite good.
