Description
Raymond de Penyafort. [Manuscript]. France, ca. 3rd quarter of the 13th century. 133 x 93mm. [56] leaves, complete. Ink on parchment, 23 to 25 lines per page, with capitals in red and blue. Bound in attractive brown morocco, circa 17th century, with elaborate gilt decoration. A very attractive manuscript. The manuscript contains a guide for confessors of the Dominican Order, from Raymond of Penyafort's "Summa de casibus poenitentiae." It follows the first redaction of the Summa, here organized into 71 chapters without division into books. Following the table at front, the work begins "De symonia. Symonia inter crimina ecclesiastica primum obtinet locum..." and the final line at the end reads "valde quippe elata mens retunditur super quem se extulit supponatur," which is a quote taken from St. Gregory the Great's Moralia in Job.A stunning manuscript overall, complete and in an attractive binding. With notes to some margins, being corrections made by the copyist and some 15th century annotations in cursive. From a private collection. This manuscript is accompanied by a European export license which will be provided to the winning bidder.
Condition
Binding is sound and exhibiting little wear. Contents with some typical light dust-soiling of finger-soiling. One leaf with short tear stitched, being an original flaw to the parchment which the scribe wrote around (see photos.)
