Northwestern Europe, ca. 19th century CE. A massive ox horn and silver cornucopia that may have graced the table or entry foyer of a grand estate! The hollow horn is mounted on a pair of silver-brass clawfoot legs with a low relief classical woman nursing 2 children. The open rim is a high quality 90% silver fitting. Usually, the centerpiece of a feast and an iconic emblem of Thanksgiving in the United States, cornucopias were popular motifs in the 19th century to symbolize a generous and fortunate host, vestiges of the drinking horns from classical antiquity and Viking eras, and the clawed feet are inspired by the stands commonly seen in Medieval horns. Condition
Repair to horn with a horn patch / inlay near the narrow tip. Missing a silver mounting, with stain to horn and remains of adhesive where it attached. Patina and toning to the silver areas and some loss to silver gilt. Some abrasions, but rest of horn is overall very good condition for its size.
