Colonial school Peru 18th century. Virgin of Popolo. Oil on canvas fixed to board. The Virgin of Santa Maria Mayor also called the Virgin of the Snow is a Byzantine icon dated between the 11th and 13th centuries that is preserved in the Basilica of Santa Maria la Mayor in Rome. Its origin was taken from the image known as the Hodigitria of the church of Hodegon in Constantinople. The cult of the Virgen del Popolo was introduced by the Society of Jesus.
