Description of this plate in the 1981 guide - Pairpoint's First Fifty Plates reads: The First Church of Christ in Sandwich (Christopher Wren) carries on the identity & ministry of three historic churches. The First Parish Society was established in 1638, just a year after the community of Sandwich was settled. In early 1800's, a majority of the congregation Church withdrew from the First Parish & organized the Calvinistic Congregational Church, building the present structure in 1847. In 1918, three churches – the First Parish (then a part of the Unitarian fellowship), the Congregational, & the Methodist agreed to federate. This arrangement was discontinued in 1965, & members of the churches united in the First Church of Christ (Congregational) in Sandwich. An active & growing church, this lovely building presides with grace & dignity over the charming Town Hall square, a part of the National Register of Historic Districts. It is affectionately known as the "Christopher Wren" church because its spire is reminiscent of Sir Christopher Wren's Masterpiece- Saint. On a window sill, these cup plates capture the sun beautifully, further accentuating the intricate designs & color.Condition: Excellent condition.
