Corps D Afrique, also know as the 1 st Louisiana Guard was an African American unit organized by General Ben Butler on Sept 27 th , 1862, mainly of freemen, but soon took escaping slaves as members. This was one of the only Union regiments that had African American officers, most of the units officers below the rank of Major we African Americans, due to racism in the Union forces they were mainly used for army labor, building fortifications and such, but were heavily engaged at Port Hudson and distinguished themselves in those battles to take that fort. was In April 1864 the Corps was dissolved and its members placed in the 73 rd & 74 th U.S.C. regiments, which had nor African American officers.
