Author of elegies, messages, songs, romances, ballads, and epic works. Also known as a translator of poetry and prose, literary critic, and teacher. From 1817 to 1841 he was the Russian language teacher of the Grand Duchess and then Empress Alexandra Feodorovna and mentor of Tsarevich Alexander Nikolaevich.
