Description: 11 pp. in Hebrew, stenciled typescript on both sides of 6 sheets of paper. 32.5x21 cm (12¾8¼"), unbound. 8 September 1942.Report by the Jewish Agency for Eretz Israel on the fate of Polish Jews who fled into the Soviet Union after the invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany. Initially this was problematic, as the Soviets themselves invaded Poland from the east, but after the Germans turned on Russia, Polish citizens were considered to be allied with the Soviet Union in the war against the Nazis. As the war progressed and the Nazi invaders got further into the Soviet Union, huge numbers of Soviet citizens, mostly Jewish, sought safety by moving east, further into the interior, to escape the Nazi hordes. Due to its knowledge of how Nazis treated Jews, the Soviet government moved Jews from areas such as the Crimean Peninsula into areas further away from the front-lines. This rare contemporaneous report offers details of the peregrinations and travails of the Polish-Jewish refugees seeking some safety and solace in the vast reaches of Mother Russia.
