Description: Frontispiece portrait. Blue cloth lettered in gilt. First Edition.A critical rebuke of the Dunning School of post-Civil War historiography; detailing the timeline and effects of Reconstruction efforts and their opponents. Born into slavery in Louisiana and freed under the Emancipation Proclamation, Lynch was the first African-American Speaker of the Mississippi House of Representatives and among the first generation of African Americans elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, serving from 1873-1877 and again in the 1898s.
