Description: Printed payroll form filled out in ink. At top is printed "Pay Roll of the V. & T.R.R. Co. for the Month of [November] A.D. 1877." There are columns for the workers names, numbers of days worked, wages, occupation, amount due, and signatures of the employees acknowledging receipt of payment. At the top of the sheet is the notation, "Way and Section Foremen." Sheet measures 45.8x29.3 cm (18x11½"), folded, with docketing on verso.Fascinating glimpse into the operation of the Virginia & Truckee Railroad, connecting Virginia City through Gold Hill and ending at Carson City. The railroad began operation in 1870. The payroll reveals the tasks performed, including watchman, porter, cook, machinist, oreman-silver, wiper, truckman, etc. Some employees are listed twice, if they performed two duties - T. Barnett was both watchman and wiper. And while A. Harlan was an Oreman, his wife, Mrs. A. Harlan, was a cook. There is one receipt slip affixed, evidently a late payment. There are about 30 listings under "Way" (though as noted there are multiple listings of some workers) and seven under "Section Foremen."
