Tunic is excellent condition. During WWII, women made contributions to the war effort through various avenues including the medical field. Through organizations such as the American Red Cross (ARC), many women volunteered as nurses or nurse aides. Through the Volunteer Nurse’s Aides Corps, women provided aid to overworked nurses. Women also provided medical aid through different means like through the ARC Motor Corps. This was a program, predominantly composed of women, where volunteers transported supplies, injured personnel, and even other volunteers to other hospitals. For the whole duration of the war, the Red Cross Nurse Service enrolled over 200,000 people and certified half of these people to military service. These nurses served on front lines as well as in overseas hospitals caring for injured soldiers and aiding in the rehabilitation of service members. Nurses on the homefront had similar duties but assumed even more responsibility in order to replace the work gap caused by the shortage of doctors and other medical staff during the war. During the war years, over 36,000,000 volunteers and paid staff of the Red Cross fulfilled their congressional duties to, “furnish volunteer aid to the sick and wounded of armies in time of war” and to “act… as a medium of communication between the people of the United States of America and their Army and Navy.” In the 11 different volunteer Corps of the American Red Cross, women carried out various vital roles for the war effort at the homefront and overseas. At the homefront, women of the Red Cross were vital to providing relief and aid to soldiers and civilians alike. They were producers and distributors of emergency supplies, such as first aid materials, clothing, and food. Women of the Red Cross were also responsible for providing comfort to the thousands of servicemen that returned from war and families that migrated to centralized military locations, such as San Diego, through media entertainment, clubs for socialization, serving hot meals and a place to stay. In addition to comfort, Red Cross women provided guidance in times of turmoil. Women were one of the quintessential facilitators of communication and correspondence between members of armed forces and their families. They raised donation campaigns for the war effort as well. In Europe, women were field directors and crew for relief services.  The majority of mobile club services were women; some were trained to be service staff as well as auto mechanics that maintained their mobile club vehicles. Red cross volunteers were stationed across Europe where they helped transport military personnel, sick, wounded, food and supplies. The most notable roles played by Women in the Red Cross were their accomplishments in the medical front of the war. Women were trainers and educators in water safety, home nutrition, home nursing and first aid. They also filled the high demand of office, administrative and medical staff roles for overburdened hospitals both inside and outside the U.S. 71000 certified nurses of the American Red Cross served the US military in active duty. Red Cross Women contributed to vital blood donation programs and centers. By September of 1945, the results of the red cross paid off with 16 million dollars put into blood donation and 13. 4 million pints of plasma donated from 6.6 million donors. Indeed, the lives of thousands of wounded soldiers and civilians were saved and supported by the efforts of American Red Cross Women.
