Description
Silver medal, 2 in. dia., a fencing competition award belonging to REINHARD HEYRDRICH (1904-1942), the architect of the Final Solution who was slain in a bomb attack by British-trained Czech and Slovak agents. The obverse bears a raised image of a fencer in a proud pose with his sword, reading ‘Apollo Munchen’ at the top. The word ‘Apollo’ likely a reference to the League of Apollo, a fencing fraternity Heinrich Himmler was a part of in his university days, ironically whose president was Jewish. The reverse features an oak wreath and is inscribed ‘R. Heydrich 3. Rang im Degensechten 22. Nov. 1932’, designating him as the third place winner. Presented in its original blue case with black felt interior. In our research the only medal similar to this was for an SS fencing championship in Berlin, 1936, in which Heydrich was again a participant, earning fifth place with a sword and third place with a sabre.
