Description
Silver medal 1.5 in. diameter, commemorating the unexpected but ultimately doomed attempt at unity between the early Nazi Party and the German Zionist Federation. In the early days of Nazi rule, the Zionist Movement shared a common goal with the Third Reich government: encourage immigration of German Jews to Palestine. In the spring of 1933, Kurt Tuchler, German-Jewish judge and high-ranking member of the German Zionist Federation, contacted Leopold von Mildenstein, a senior Nazi officer who was head of the Jewish department of the SD (the security service of the SS and the Nazi party), and asked him to publish an article in the Nazi press about the Jewish Yishuv in Palestine. In 1933, the two men traveled to Palestine for one month, and after their return to Germany, von Mildenstein published a series of 12 illustrated articles titled ‘A Nazi Travels to Palestine’ in the mouthpiece of Nazi Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels ‘Der Angriff’ (‘The Attack’). To commemorate the article series, Goebbels commissioned this medal. The obverse bears a Star of David in the center, surrounded by the German legend ‘Ein Nazi fahrt nach Palestina’ (‘A Nazi Travels to Palestine’), while the reverse shows a swastika and the words ‘Und erzahlt davon in Angriff’ (‘And he tells about it in Der Angriff’). Slight oxidation, else very good and presented in the original case with push pin closure, also in very good condition.
