Item Details
Description
Fascinating illustrated diary created by a German child, one 'Oskar Helberg', a Hitler Youth member and probably about 12-15 years old, relocated to K.L.V. Bayerbach in 1941. The Kinderlandverschickung (KLV) camps were established by the government to save children in Nazi Germany from the risks associated with the aerial bombing of cities, by moving them to areas thought to be less at risk. Relocations peaked in July 1941 with 171,079 relocated that month. By April 1942, around 850,000 had been evacuated, with half being sent to private homes, the rest to dedicated K.L.V. 'camps'. In this case, young Helberg was sent to 'K.L.V. Lager Bayerbach'. His 106pp. 8vo. diary commences on May 18, 1941 and ends on Sep. 10, 1941, although this book he marks as 'Volume One'. Working with a simple translation, we see that on May 18th, Oskar left Altona by rail, saying farewell to his relatives. At one point he mentions the Ku Klux Klan, and states 'we are not in America'. He describes the various cities through which he passes, and his arrival at the camp where 'the local group leader bade us welcome. The boys and girls delighted us with their songs and sayings...'.. He seems very pleased with the camp, activities offered, and the meals served. He also attends church services, and cites a harvest festival, comparing it to a Catholic belief, and takes English classes. Life in the country actually seems quite good for the young man, whose experiences are much like those of any camper - long hikes, athletic activities and competitions, birthday and religious celebrations, movies, sing-alongs, work in the gardens, etc. On June 22, he announces: 'With the greatest astonishment...the decisive battle against the U.S.S.R. has begun [the launch of the invasion of Russia the same day]...'. There are also classes but no political or anti-Semitic education is mentioned. In early September, there is a field trip to Munich and Bad Reichenhall where Oskar visits the Haus der Deutschen Kunst, Braun Haus, Feldherrnhalle, Hofbrauhaus, and other city sites. They also visit Berchtesgaden, on the way declaring: '...we eat like the Pope in Rome...' and visit an SS barracks at Obersalzburg. He keeps the ticket stubs as souvenirs. Mischief includes stealing liters of beer, drinking them and hiding the evidence, as well as procuring wine on their rail trip. Oskar, who has a keen sense of humor and who seems not at all indoctrinated, decorates his journal with fancy lettering and small sketches, 13 photographs of himself and his friends and camp administrators, and about a dozen commercial images of some of the sites he visited. Overall very good.
