Description
(1893-1979) U.S. brigadier general and the only officer to be awarded the Distinguished Service Cross in three different wars. Also awarded the Silver Star, two Legion of Merit awards, five Purple Hearts, and more. Scarce, fine content A.L.S. signed twice ‘General and Mrs. A. S. Champeny’ and ‘General Champeny’, 1p. 12mo., [Wellington, KS, Dec. 17, 1963’], executed within and on the verso of a small Christmas card to a friend, in part: ‘…Last March we went to Europe. Picked up a Volkswagen…and drove it over 12,000 miles. Drove over the battlefields of Italy again. Hills seemed higher and steeper than ever before. I marvel that we made it over there…’. With the original envelope addressed in his hand and in fine condition.
