Garden of Eden Needlepoint Sampler, Amelia George, Cornwall, England, 1834. Fine plain-woven wool ground worked predominantly in cross-stitched silk threads, with satin-stitched and stumpwork details, the top register depicting symmetrical house and yard populated by deer, dogs, and waterfowl, above a verse reading 'Have not Eve and Adam taught us, / Their sad Profit to compute / To what dismal State they brought us, / When they stole forbidden Fruit.' inside a square foliate border, the lower half depicting large apple tree with serpent, Adam, and Eve at trunk, the surrounding field densely ornamented with discrete bird, flower, cupid, and insect motifs, signed 'Amelia.
