A rare Thomas Heath gilt brass Butterfield-type dial, English, mid-18th century,
signed T Heath Fecit, the unusual figure of eight shaped dial engraved with three hour scales, inset compass bowl, the reverse engraved with floral decoration and twelve towns and latitudes, some of the engraving is inlaid with black and red wax, in shaped fish skin case with red velvet lining dial with folded gnomon 1/5in x 2 1/5in x 3 1/3in (1cm x 5 1/2cm x 8 1/2cm), case 4/5in x 2 2/3in x 3 2/3in (2cm x 7cm x 9 1/5cm)

Thomas Heath was apprenticed to Benjamin Scott of the Grocers' Company in 1712 and was freed in 1720. His workshop was 'at the Hercules and Globe' in the Strand, London from 1720 until his death in 1773. He has many apprentices including George Adams senior and Tycho Wing, the later he took into partnership in 1751. Heath sold a wide range of astronomical, mathematical and surveying instruments as well as books.
