Description
On November 3, 1903, the Department of Panama broke away from Colombia and established itself as the independent Republic of Panama.Postage stamps available in the new country's post offices were the seven American Bank Note Co. of New York 'map' stamps of 1888-1892 printed on unwatermarked paper from engraved steel plates. The stamps' vignette features a map of the Isthmus of Panama, and so local postal authorities could easily add its name. The first of these locally-produced rubber handstamp overprints read "REPUBLICA DE PANAMA." Soon thereafter, printers adopted movable type to overprint the panes of one hundred stamps. This overprint also included a horizontal bar to block-out the word "Columbia" and added a pair of "PANAMA"s running vertically on the sides of each stamp.
