Lot Essay
Pâte-sur-pâte was first successfully made at Meissen in 1878 under the direction of the chemist Dr. Julius Heintze. In 1880, pâte-sur-pâte production moved from the modeler's department to the painting department, and the then director Ludwig Sturm encouraged a 'more lively and spirited' approach to classicism. See B. Bumpus, Pâte-sur-Pâte, The Art of Ceramic Relief Decoration, 1849-1902, London, 1992, for a discussion. For an entry of the present vase form in The 1911 Meissen Tradesman's Catalogue, see pl. 53 and 62.
For another vase of this form and same subject but in a different decorative style, see Sotheby's, New York, 4 November 2011, lot 89.
