Michael P. Smith (1937–2008) was an American photographer renowned for his documentary work capturing the culture, music, and people of New Orleans, particularly during the mid-20th century. Born in New Rochelle, New York, Smith moved to New Orleans in the early 1960s and began his career as a freelance photographer.Smith's photographs offer a vivid and intimate portrayal of New Orleans and its diverse communities, including scenes from Mardi Gras celebrations, jazz funerals, second-line parades, and everyday life in the city's neighborhoods.
