Gerda Wegener, Danish, b. March 15, 1886, d. The twelve individual artworks are produced as pochoirs, a type of stenciled screen printing which, for the most part, are created by the hand of the artist and assistants, rather than by commercial processes. Wegener’s suite of erotic paintings were first exhibited in 1917, painted in watercolors and signed by the artist. Later editions of the artworks were published in 1921, 1925 and in 1930. The 1930 publication included a series of poems to accompany each artwork in the suite. The 1925 edition and 1930 edition were published in a limited-edition of approximately 350 suites. Individually Acid Free Matted and Shrink Wrapped. Gerda Wegener was a Danish painter and illustrator. Wegener studied at the Royal Art Academy in Copenhagen and was active in Copenhagen until she moved to Paris in 1912. She created illustration art for timely publications in Paris that include Vogue, La Vie Parisienne and Fantasio. Gerda Wegener next moved to Morocco and eventually returned to Denmark in 1938. The artist passed away in Copenhagen in 1940.
