Consisting of various books and pmphlets including: H. Schardin, Les Methodes de Deviation et Leurs Applications, text in French bound with large amount of photographs of high speed photography H. Schardin, The development of high speed photography in Europe, text with original photographs pasted in, Numbered 37 with stamps for Laboratoire de Recherches Techniques de Saint Louis, with a receipt dated 1953 Hubert Hermann Reinhold Schardin (17 June 1902 - 27 September 1965) was a distinguished German figure in ballistics, engineering, and academia, renowned for his contributions to high-speed photography and cinematography. He served as the director of the German-French Research Institute (ISL) in Saint-Louis, France, and was the founder and director of the Fraunhofer Society Institute for High-Speed Dynamics - Ernst-Mach-Institut (EMI) - in Freiburg im Breisgau. Schardin's significant scientific endeavors primarily revolved around high-speed physics, expanding upon the works of Ernst Mach and Fritz Ahlborn. His extensive research led to the publication of over 1,000 works. Notably, he played a pivotal role in advancing electro- and high-speed exposures, electro-optical photography, and high-speed cinematography, utilizing illumination techniques such as electric spark and flash x-rays. Pioneering high-speed measurement techniques initially tailored for ballistics applications, Schardin elevated them to a broader scientific instrumentation level, opening up new application domains. One of his seminal contributions was the collaborative development, alongside his PhD advisor Carl Cranz, of the groundbreaking Cranz-Schardin camera in 1929. This high-speed camera revolutionized scientific research for nearly a century until modern advancements in high-speed electronic digital cameras surpassed its capabilities.
