Description
Set of 25 glass stereo positives belonging to the eminent chemist and physicist, Sir William Crookes. Crookes is credited with discovering thallium and he was the inventor of the Crookes radiometer. In later life, Crookes became very interested in spiritualism. Crookes' personal label is attached to some of the images with details and dates. 1 stereo shows Crookes at his desk, 3 shows images of gold mines in South Africa including, the Wesselton mine taken on 06/01/1896, De Beers compound and the crushing and concentrating Mill at the Kimberley mine. 2 show the corner of the Great Pyramid in 1905, 1 of Guernsey in 1907, 7 on the Isle of Sark with family from 1906-07 and 1 shows the periodic table in the style of a space lemniscate. Housed in a fitted wooden box. 1 plate has a corner missing and 1 has a crack. Some edge sealing is missing. Generally very good.
