Large format album containing over 90 images and postcards relating to Dr. John Lee Hydrick. John Lee Hydrick was a student of Wofford College in the class of 1908. A native of Spartanburg, Hydrick was a very well rounded student. He was president of the junior class, president of the Calhoun Literary Society, captain of the gymnasium team and a member of the Chi Phi Fraternity. He was the first editor of the Bohemian in 1908. He was awarded the Rhodes Scholarship in the year of his graduation, 1908. Later, he studied medicine at the Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. He spent much of his career at the Rockefeller Foundation and in the late 1930s, he was working in the Dutch East Indies, doing hospital work in Java. By 1954, when Wofford awarded him an honorary doctorate, he was on the staff of the Governor General of the Dutch East Indies, later receiving a Dutch Knighthood. His work also took him to Brazil, the Cayman Islands, India, Peru and Ecuador. The album follows an interesting journey starting in Hilversum in November 1927 and sailing from Rotterdam to America. Arriving in New York with images of a berthed ship titled "quarantine station". More images show Opelika, Alabama, a cotton-growing area. Images of a Leprosarium in Carville, Louisiana, which was the first leprosarium opened in the U.S. and operated from 1894 to 1999. Continuing to Salt Lake City, San Pablo Bay, and various views of San Francisco. Then onto Honolulu, Waikiki Beach, Kobe in Japan, and views of Hong Kong. Wear to album covers. Images are good.
