Item Details

Description

A historic American polychrome wood billet head from the three masted sailing schooner 'Wawona', hewn as a triangular form with incised scrolling leaf spray terminating at one end with a rosette medallion, 75"l x 25"w x 12"d. Provenance: Ken Brown, Frank's Fisherman, San Francisco. Note: The Wawona, translates as the 'Northern Spotted owl', was built by Hans Bendixen in 1897. The Wawona was the largest schooner built in the United States and one of the last three masted lumber ships in existence. Her builder, Hans Bendixen, was a Danish shipwright who arrived in San Francisco in 1863. His shipyard, established in 1879, eventually built more than 75 schooners and four square-rigged ships. This billet head was removed from the vessel in the 1950's and replaced with a modern example prior to 1964.
