Pre-Columbian, Peru, Paracas, ca. 500 BCE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery urn of sizable form bearing a pair of incised sun faces. Each abstract visage exhibits slit-form eyes and mouth, zigzagging columns around the eyes, and a serrated collar, all surrounded by radiating solar rays. The light-brown body is smooth to the touch and was likely used in a funerary setting during burial rites. Size: 11.7" W x 14.75" H (29.7 cm x 37.5 cm)
This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis by Labor Ralf Kotalla in Germany and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A pdf copy of the report will accompany the item upon purchase.
Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, acquired from 2000 to 2010; ex-Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany

Condition
Professionally repaired with restoration, and resurfacing with overpainting along new material and break lines. Abrasions and light fading to pigment, with retooling to some incised decorations, and minor pitting, otherwise in great condition. Previous inventory label beneath base.
