Chinese painting on silk portrait of emperor, 18th/19th century. Painting by sight, on silk, this embroidered or woven square was either integrated directly into the surcoat in its manufacture, or it could be appliqued onto an existing surcoat, thus allowing the wearer to up-grade his rank without having to replace the Surcoat.
