Description
Roy McLendon (American, b. 1932), Florida Highwayman Painting (Swimming Mahi)

oil on canvas, signed at lower right, unframed.
20 x 24 in.
Roy "R.A." McLendon was a member of the Highwaymen, a group of young African-American landscape painters in Florida who produced art in the 1950s. The original group included James Gibson, Alfred Hair, Harold Newton, Livingston Roberts, and Mary Ann Carroll. They painted on inexpensive materials such as Upson board, and roofer's material. They worked out of their cars, and traveled along the state's coast, selling their work from door to door. Today, their work is recognized for its importance to the American folk art tradition.
From the Collection of Barbara Ortiz; acquired directly from the artists during her time spent in Florida
