Description
A two-handed flamberge by Wolfgang Stantler of Munich, dated 1595The sturdy, double-edged blade with fine waved edges on both sides. A shield with a cross mark and "W.S." incised at the root of the blade. The date "1595" incised on the other side. The long ricasso with sturdy guards on both sides. Blackened quillons with incised ornamentation. The arms angled towards the blade and extending out into spirals, decorative side-mounted spirals. The heavily ridged guard rings entwined around stylised fleur-de-lys motifs on both sides. Original stepped grip with three central nodes, only scant remnants of the leather cover preserved. The double tapered pommel with quadruple fullers and incised ornamentation. Length 174.5 cm.Wolfgang Stantler or Stäntler (1554 - 1622) took over his father's workshop in Munich in 1582. He worked for the Bavarian dukes and the Munich Arsenal and Armoury, among others. Similar two-handed swords, dated 1595 and 1598, can be found in the collections of the Bürgerliches Zeughaus (Civic Armoury) in Vienna and the Oberhausmuseum in Passau.Provenance: Collection of Dr. Heinrich Tanner in Herisau (Switzerland).
