1830s Phenakisticope Set of Living Pictures. Scarce early animation from the French inventor. This set retains 9 image wheels, the holder and the viewer disc. The discs have various animated scenes conveying motion including a very early Flying Machine. The Phenakisticope was invented in 1832 and was the first apparatus to show animated pictures. Alphonse Giroux commercialized the idea with a hand-held device and hand painted discs with various animated pictures.
