Description

Two South Staffordshire enamel patch boxes, early 19th century
One printed and hand-coloured with 'Fame Proclaiming her Heroes', her trumpet draped with a banner naming Duncan, Jervis, Abercromby, Nelson and Howe, beside 'Peace with Plenty' with laurel wreath and cornucopia, 5.5cm wide, the other painted with Hope and Fame on shore watching a naval battle, with inscription, 'Hope stands beholding thier [sic] Actions most Glorious, And Fame with her Trumpet sounds NELSONS Victorious', 5.2cm wide (2)
Footnotes:
The first-mentioned box may commemorate the Treaty of Amiens in 1802.

Condition

First-mentioned box (lower in photo): There are some fine cracks in the cover, mostly located near the metal mount and some fine scratches of little significance. There are losses to the green enamel around the bottom edge of the base of the box, revealing the copper underneath and a little corresponding loss to some of the white enamel to the interior and associated fine cracks. Otherwise good and notably free from restoration.

Second-mentioned box (upper in photo): In good condition, save for a short crack to the lid near the edge of the mount, visible underneath the words 'Trumpet sounds'. There are typical fine cracks to the interior of the box and to the base, where a longer concentric crack is visible to the exterior and some typical wear to the base where the box has been placed on a surface. Otherwise good and also notably free from any restoration.

The original mirrors to the interior of both boxes are cracked with degradation to the silvering.
