Rare white pasteboard picture box "Made Under Patent by The Moonlight Bait Co. Paw Paw, Mich." with crisp label illustration of The Bug, and containing the correct 2 7/8" white lure with red face and tail blush. "1916's Newest" box is in extraordinary condition, with only light wear, water staining on the top edge and a bit age darkened, about Ex-, with the Sheridan R. Jones collection stamp on the interior of the lid. The lure appears unfished, also Ex-/Ex due only to light box wear and a few miniscule bubbles on the tail, definitely unfished. Pictured on page 70 of "The Life and Legend of Sheridan R. Jones". A very rare short production combination, one of Moonlight's rarest and hardest to find.

Referred to as "America's pioneering outdoor writer", Sheridan Jones (1881-1958) was certainly one of the most respected and prolific angling writers of his era. Many of the lures offered in this auction, where noted, were personally owned by Jones. Several were given to the esteemed author and outdoor writer for his professional opinion, others as gifts by lure makers vying for his favor. Stated best by author Joseph Hilko in his 2010 book The Life and Legend of Sheridan R. Jones: "Jones' legacy as an educator, naturalist, professional writer and world-class angler is worthy of remembrance today".
