Information on Artwork

Among his many talents of paint and drawing, Picasso was also a prolific printmaker. He began producing linocuts with another spanish printmaker to advertise bullfights and ceramic exhibits. While working on these posters, the artist developed new techniques within the age-old print method. Where the traditional linocut required separate carved blocks for each color used, Picasso?s method involved using a single block and slowly carving away at the stamp after each pass. This resulted in the artist?s ability to see the final result.

Who is Jacqueline?Commonly known as Picasso?s muse, Jacqueline Roque became his second wife following an affair spanning two decades. Jacqueline au Bandeau de Face may be simply titled, but the impact she had on the artist is complex. While the muse never sat for his portraits, her personage had a unyielding hold on the artist. His obsession is illustrated in this portrait through the use of the cubist style. For example, the right side of the face is in the profile stance, showing the ear, eye, and shape of the nose. In contrast, the left side shows her face straight on with a larger view of her eye that makes direct contact with the viewer. Combining the two viewpoints of her face, Picasso illustrates depth and shares versions of her visage in a single image.
