Artwork Description
This lithograph is one of a suite of 50 titled Cinquante Dessins. Matisse himself edited and printed the suite of his drawings of women to accompany a 1920 exhibition of his work. Daily painting sessions alternated with hours on end devoted to drawing, a corrective exercise Matisse would use from now on whenever he felt his work was in danger of losing its balance between color and feeling on the one hand, and line and form on the other. Matisse was evolving methods he would use for the rest of his life. He published fifty of these drawings in a portfolio called Cinquante Dessins to coincide with his exhibition at Bernheim-Jeune.
Matisse is often regarded as the most important French painter of the 20th century. The leader of the Fauvist movement around 1900, Matisse pursued the expressiveness of color throughout his career. His subjects were largely domestic or figurative, and a distinct Mediterranean verve presides in the treatment.
