Condition Notes: The discovery of Russian alexandrite, or who discovered it, is shrouded in mystery, however, the origins are deeply rooted along the Tokovaya River at the base of the Ural Mountains. Initially, it was likely mistaken for emerald, given the abundance of emerald mines in the area at the time, and its true nature was not recognized until much later in history. Dr. Nils von Nordenskjöld is often credited as the first to accurately identify the stone as a new variety of chrysoberyl circa 1834, shortly before it was named "alexandrite" after the Russian Tsar Alexander II. Russian alexandrite is largely gauged off clarity, however, it is extremely difficult to find genuine clean stones. This makes the desirability of this exceptional 7.32 x 6.31 x 5.38 mm example, which boasts unparalleled clarity, all the more remarkable. A must see!
