Description
British Whiteware Mochaware "Empire" Bulge Jug, Circa 1830. Slip-banded in pumpkin and dark brown, and surrounded by an undulating earthworm in dark brown, blue and pumpkin slips, surrounded above the bulge with a green-glazed rouletted reeded border, the handle with leafy terminals. H: 6.125 in., W: 7.5 in., D: 5.75 in. Jonathan Rickard invented the term "Empire bulge," a shape commonly found in the 1830s. On p. 63 in "Mocha and Related Dipped Wares, 1770-1939," Rickard notes that "The extra bulge below the pouring lip has no apparent function but instead is a stylistic development related to the Empire waistline of period fashion".
