Description
Nine Indonesian Wayang Kulit Painted and Gilt Leather Stick Shadow Puppets, and Two Carved and Painted Wooden Puppets. Six leather puppets marked on the sticks "DJUNI - 1961;" "Arjuno;" "P.D.;" "KR PATI;" "SRI THANDI" and "RAMA." Largest: H: 26.5 in., W: 8.125 in., D: .75 in. "Wayang Kulit," an Indonesian form of shadow puppetry, are reenactments of stories performed by the "dhalang," or puppeteer. The puppets are made of buffalo hide, painted and decorated in intricate designs and with great attention to identifiable features, thus enabling the audience to recognize each character. The stories are of kings, princes, ogres and knights with narration. Many of the stories are derived from stores in the Hindu epics "Ramayana" and "Mahabharata".
