Rare Effanbee "Lucifer" Painted Composition Marionette Doll, 1938; and a Painted Composition and Fabric Doll. The barefoot marionette designed by puppeteer Virginia Curtis Austin, in the original clothing, black strings, marked on the back of the neck "(c)/ LUCIFER/ V. AUSTIN/ EFFANBEE;" the doll with painted facial features, stuffed linen or canvas body, arms and legs, wearing a cotton print dress, apron and pearl necklace.Lucifer marionette: H: 14 in., W: 6.5 in., D: 2.5 in.Doll: H: 16.25 in.The Effanbee Lucifer puppet was one of the first Effanbee puppets made for Marshall Field's stores. When first introduced they were made with bare feet. The NAACP requested that future puppets be manufactured wearing shoes, because the barefoot puppet conveyed the negative image of a poor black boy. Marshall Field and Virginia Curtis were sensitive to the stereotype, and readily complied with the request.
