Description
Native American, Southwestern United States, Dine (Navajo), ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A beautiful silver beaded necklace comprised of Mercury Dimes and 6 Walking Liberty Half Dollars along with central silver naja pendant in horseshoe form, inlaid with a turquoise stone. The carinated beads are formed from pairs of US Mercury dimes, drilled, hammered, and soldered onto each other - the years on most range between 1928 to 1945. Silver bail loops were welded to the half dollars, which range in years from 1942 to 1945. The coins are strung on a substantial silver snake chain with a hook and loop clasp. The central lunate naja is a Navajo symbol that may have been introduced to the Southwest by the Spanish who likely adopted it from Muslim / Near Eastern tradition. Size of strand: 23" L (58.4 cm); naja pendant: 2" L x 2" W (5.1 cm x 5.1 cm); silver quality: 91.4% to 94.1%; weight: 341.7 grams
