Item Details
Description
A modern realist watercolor on paper titled "The mill was of course, the focal point of the community (Spring Mill, Indiana)" by American artist George David Yater. Hand signed bottom right. Created circa 1950s. Artist name and title annotated on verso. A vivid scene showcasing the architecture of a classic mill in America. The artist included figures in brightly dressed clothes which also provides scale to the building. Stark shadows and light create a dynamic composition. George David Yater (1910-1993) was an Indiana-born painter associated with the Cape Cod School of Art, and most well-known for his watercolors. Yater had an affluent art career serving as the Director of the Provincetown Art Association, illustrating for Ford Times Magazine, was the Executive Director of the Sarasota Art Association (now the Art Center Sarasota), Director of the Middletown Fine Arts Center, and an instructor at Castle Hill Truro Center for the Arts in Massachusetts. He is listed in "Who Was Who in Art, Who's Who in Massachusetts, Who's Who in New England and Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution." Yater's artworks have been in numerous exhibitions from 1930-1991. From a private collection. Dimensions: 15"h x 21"w (unframed in matte). In exceptionally good vintage condition.
