This antique map presents a view of the Bay of St. Julian in Patagonia, Argentina, as observed by the English pirate G. Anson in 1756. The map showcases Anson's squadron, captured during the early phase of his journey. St. Julian, a natural harbor, served as a crucial stopping point before sailing south towards the Strait of Magellan. Anson's remarkable work, "A Voyage Round the World", offers an extraordinary firsthand account of his audacious mission to attack Spanish territories and plunder their treasure galleons in western South America. Undertaking this perilous and challenging expedition, Anson faced significant losses, with over two-thirds of his crew and three of his eight ships lost along the way. However, his squadron persevered, sailing from 1740 to 1744 on his flagship, the Centurion, with a mere 125 men who completed a remarkable circumnavigation of the globe. The pinnacle of Anson's efforts came in 1743 when he successfully captured the larger and better-armed Spanish treasure galleon, "Nuestra Señora de Cobadonga", near Cape Espiritu Santo, Samar Island, Philippines. This triumphant achievement earned Anson recognition as a Lord of the British crown and established him as one of the prominent English commanders during the Seven Years' War. This copperplate engraved map is in excellent condition and measures approximately 20 3/4" x 11". It is an authentic historical piece, and its authenticity is guaranteed.
