The translator of Eastern Languages to the King of France and the director of College Louis Le Grand, JOUANNIN (1783-1844), resided in Istanbul between 1803 and 1810 and wrote The Ottoman History, comprising the period until the reign of Sultan Mahmud. The book is remembered with its illustrations which are taken from important sources such as Grelot, Barlett and d’Ohsson. Jouannin studied at the “L’École des Jeunes de Langues” in Istanbul.
