Provenance: From the Eckhardt family collection (Lot 2001 - 2220). Acquired between 1947 and 1952 in Japan by Dr. and Mrs. Mary and Richard Eckhardt, both natives of San Antonio, Texas. The couple married in 1942 while Dr. Eckhardt served as a surgeon in the United States Army. Stationed in post-World War II Tokyo from 1947 onwards, Dr. Eckhardt was later joined by his wife. During their time in Japan, spanning from 1947 to 1952, the couple enthusiastically amassed a notable collection of fine Asian art from esteemed dealers and establishments such as Yamanaka & Co. in Kyoto, T. Kasahara and Ono Art Shop in Tokyo, and Watanabe Shozaburo, a renowned print publisher. Their extensive collection was featured twice at Sotheby's New York Asian Art Sales in 2012.
Dr. Eckhardt received numerous U.S and Allied awards and decorations due to his outstanding service in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, and Japan. Following his retirement from the army, he dedicated a decade to serving as a physician at the San Antonio Sate Hospital.
California Asian Art Auction Gallery is honored to present this extensive collection of Chinese and Japanese works of art, which offers a glimpse into the discerning taste and passion of Dr. and Mrs. Eckhardt, as well as the rich cultural and art history of China and Japan.
