Photographs approx 34.2x26.4 cm (13½x10½"); cardstock: 55.5x45.5 cm (22x18").Each photograph signed in pencil by Alexander Arkatov. Alexander Arkatov (1890-1961) was a Russian-Jewish filmmaker who emigrated to America and was active as a photographer in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Collection includes portraits of Hon. James Rolph Jr. (the former Mayor of San Francisco and Governor of CA) and his successor Hon. Angelo J. Rossi. Rossi was Mayor during a pivotal time in the city's modern history. During the years 1931-44, Rossi presided over the construction of the Bay Bridge, the Golden Gate Bridge, the building of Treasure Island, and the Golden Gate International Exposition. During his tenure as Mayor, the 1934 San Francisco General Strike unfolded on the waterfront.
