Provenance
The Collection of Jules Porgès, Paris, by whom offered
Sale, Hotel Drouot, Paris, 25 April 1892, lot 40
The Lehmann Collection Paris, by whom offered
Sale, Galerie Georges Petit, Paris, 12-13 June, 1925, lot 258, where purchased by the present owner's great grandfather

Given the soft handling of the facial features, along with the costume, the present work could be dated to the late 1630s or early 1640s, shortly before Jonson left England for the Netherlands. The lace collar may have been added at a later date.

Condition
The canvas has a stiff relining, and the varnish is scuffed and very dirty. There is minor abrasion to the canvas edge, presumably where the frame has rubbed, including a very tiny hole, upper centre. In very strong light, it is just possible to see some old retouching to the hair, particularly to the darker tones and contours, and a little retouching to the background. In raking light, it is possible to see restoration to an old loss to the costume, lower left. There is a little further discoloured infilling to the costume and face.
Inspection under ultraviolet light is hindered by the thick varnish, but it is just possible to see: a little retouching and infilling to the background; the aforementioned retouching to the hair; some retouching to the costume, including to the aforementioned restored loss; a little infilling to the face.
Unexamined out of the frame.
