Description
Undated etching by Friz Sturm (1834-1906). Signed by artist. Measures approx. 12 1/2" x 15 1/4" OA; 7" x 9 3/4" SS. Sturm was the son of the teacher Karl Sturm. His father mainly taught the sons of sailors and had gone to sea himself. Fritz also initially went to sea, but had to give up this profession for health reasons and then worked as a house painter. He began his artistic training by studying at the Berlin Academy from 1859 to 1861 and continued until 1864 in the studio of the marine painter Hermann Eschke . Studies continued from 1866 to 1870 under Hans Fredrik Gude at the Karlsruhe Academy . Throughout 1864-1893 he had exhibitions at the Royal Academy of Arts in Berlin, receiving the Gold Medal for Art and Science from the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin in 1893. In 1897 Fritz Sturm was appointed professor at the Berlin Academy. Artwork has not been removed from frame for inspection.
